Note: This is the procedure as it applies to the IKA. Procedures vary from dojo to dojo. This procedure is only to be a guidline and is not an absolute.

Starting Class
1. The class starts with all students standing in the ready position. Fists clenched in front (Tate hand position) and shoulder width stance (hachiji dachi). Students should move quickly to their position on the floor, not casually stroll to their position. Students should face forward and not talk. The class should be facing East.
2. The instructor goes to the sitting position first (seiza)
3. The senior student in the class (usually front row, closest to the right) calls out "seiza". The entire class should go to the sitting position at this time. All commands should be delivered in a loud strong voice.
4. The senior student then calls out "mokuto" instructing everyone to close eyes and go into meditation. Meditation should be for a duration of no shorter than 5 seconds, preferably longer. "Mokuto" meditation vs. Mokuso meditation is very different.  "Mokuto" is a very powerful focused meditation done in a shorter time whereas "Mokuso" should be for a much deeper meditation of longer duration  often taking many minutes or longer perform.
5. The senior student then calls out in a strong forceful voice "Mokuto Yame",(stop meditation and open your eyes) then the student calls out "Dojo Rules", all students then repeat "Dojo Rules" and then the class repeats each of the rules as they are called out:
a. Each seek perfection of character
b. Each be faithful
c. Each endeavor
d. Each respect others
e. Each refrain from violent behavior
6. The senior student then calls out "shomen ni, rei" and then all students bow to the front of the karate dojo.
7. The instructor then calls out "ichi kiai". All students then rise to the left leg up and the right knee still on the ground. Execute a left outside block (hidari, chudan soto uke) and then a right hand punch at the same time shouting out a kiai.
8. All students then stand, go to attention stance (musubi dachi) , bow and then go to the ready stance (hachiji dachi) with fists held in front of them.

Procedure for Ending Class
1. Clean the dojo for a few minutes (o-shoji). Everyone should help emphatically.
2. The class starts with all students standing in the ready position. Fists clenched in front (Tate hand position) and shoulder width stance (hachiji dachi). Students should move quickly to their position on the floor, not casually stroll to their position. Students should face forward and not talk.
3. The instructor goes to the sitting position first (seiza)
4. The senior student in the class call out "seiza". The entire class should go to the sitting position at this time. All commands should be delivered in a loud strong voice. 
5. The senior student then calls out "mokuto" instructing everyone to close their eyes and go into meditation. Meditation should be for a duration of no shorter than 5 seconds, preferably longer.
6. The senior student then calls "mokuto yame, shomeni rei". This means to stop meditation and then to bow, facing front.
7. The senior student then calls out "face the instructor (the class, sitting then faces the instructor), "{title of the instructor}", (the class then repeats the title), "domo arigato gozaimashita" (this means thank you very much, the class then repeats this), "{title} ni rei". Depending on the instructor, the titles are different. It is up to the senior student to know the title of their instructor before they start. If in question, they can always ask the instructor.
8. The senior student then calls out "face each other" (students then face each other in the same horizontal line, if there is an odd number of students, the odd student faces forward). "Otagani Rei" (all students then bow to the person sitting next to them. After bowing to the student next to you, face forward again. If you do not have anyone to face, face front toward the instructor.
9. The senior student then calls out the "Dojo Kun" each line is first called out by the senior student and then repeated by the class. The lines are as follows:
a. "Dojo Kun" (Karate School Rules)
b. "Kokusai Karate-Do Kyokai" (International Karate Association)
c. "Soke Kunji (Soke's teachings)
d. "Hitosu" (Be number one)
e. "Tsuyoku" (Be strong)
f. "Tanoshiku" (Be happy and enjoy)
g. "Sekai no Karate-Do" (The world unity of the way of Karate)

9. The instructor then calls out "ichi kiai". All students then rise to the left leg up and the right knee still on the ground. Execute a left outside block(use both arms, right over left - hidari soto uke) and then a right hand punch at the same time shouting out a kiai.
10. All students then stand, go to attention stance (musubi dachi) , bow and then go to the ready stance (hachiji dachi) with tate fists held in front of them. The ready stance and state of mind is always  with mental focus/kime and awareness of self and surrounding.

11. The instructor then dismisses the class.
